DR. MIKE POWELL (MR. POWELL – CHEMISTRY/OUTDOOR CLUB)

d. June 12, 2020

Dr Mike Powell - June 12, 2020

Dr. Mike Powell passed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones on June 12, 2020. He showed signs of his ever present sense of humor right to the end. Mike was diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer in 2000. After treatment, he was in remission for 16 years. Mike resonated with the beauty and serenity of Nevada County as a young man when his family camped and fished in the area. His dream to settle in that area came true in 1983 when he became a chemistry teacher at Nevada Union High School. He created the Outdoor Club for the student sand led many weekend trips enjoying trails, rivers and lakes in the area. Mike always took along his guitar for the evening campfires. After five years of teaching, Mike followed his interests in science and health and enrolled in Medical School.

Upon completing a Fellowship in Rheumatology at Stanford, Mike returned to Nevada County to open his Medical Practice in 1997. Again, he was back to the place that made his hart sing. He enjoyed camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing and music/guitar. Open-mic night at the local club was a favorite. Even thought he moved his Practice to Sacramento in 2005, he kept his rental place at Cascade Shores. He went back there as often as possible. He said those mountains are what made him happy.

We (the family) want to have a Celebration of Mike when the social distancing order is resolved. mike loved a big party with music, food and good friends. As things look now, ti could be next Sprint or the one year anniversary of his passing. If you would like to be notified, send your email address to: drmikejpowell@gmail.com

Mike was a beloved teacher at Nevada Union and had a great impact on the students of the Class of 1988. He will be missed.

If you have any personal pics of Mike Powell from his time at NU, please contact the Committee via our Facebook group and we can add them to this gallery.

Please add any comments to his post below.

Reunion News: Update

Hello Classmates,

The 30-Year Reunion will be held on Saturday 11 August 2018.  The committee are currently making the necessary arrangements.  Tickets will soon be available here on the website as well as in the Facebook Group Nevada Union High School Class of 1988.

Frequently asked Questions (FAQ)

Why hasn’t anyone contacted me about the upcoming reunion?

Because we have hundreds of members of our graduating class, and that almost 30 years has passed, you will not be receiving anything in the snail mail about a Reunion – you need to make yourself available by subscribing to this website AND/OR joining our group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/reunion88).  All announcements will be made in both places, as I do update when there is news.

When will tickets become available?

Tickets will be available online sometime before March 2018. You will be able to purchase your tickets via PayPal or credit card only. The cost of tickets is unknown at this point, however we are trying to keep costs to a minimum for maximum enjoyment and attendance.

Will there be other activities associated with the Reunion over the weekend?

We have been known to plan other activities such as a picnic or meet-ups at the Fairgrounds beer garden, as well as bar’s in town. All additional activities will be announced at the time that the tickets go on sale.

What are donations paid to the Reunion Committee used for?

Generally speaking any donations go toward the maintenance, upkeep, cost of hosting and the domain name/web address of this website which are paid annually. For those that are not on Facebook this may be the only form of information they receive regarding events around our Reunion activities. In addition, donations can also be used to subsidise the cost of the Reunion and reunion activities that are not covered by ticket sales.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

If you have any burning questions you can email Elaine at: elaine.hay@nuhs1988.com.

KIRA MARIE PRECHTER

Kira Marie Prechter  – August 22, 1970 – February 19, 2017

It is with great sorrow that I must inform you, our friend and classmate Kira Prechter has passed away after a battle with cancer.  We have lost some of the really good ones in the past few years, she was definitely a good one.  Please keep her beautiful son and her family in your thoughts and prayers. We’ll miss you Kira.

Obituary

Kira Marie Prechter passed away on Feb. 19, 2017. She was 46.

Memorial Services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at Higgins Lions Community Center, 22490 E. Hacienda Drive in Grass Valley.

Kira was born on August 22, 1970 to Edward and Beverly Prechter in Grass Valley.

After graduating from Nevada Union High School in 1988, she went on to earn her Liberal Arts degree in Journalism from Oregon State University in 1993.

Kira’s proudest moment was becoming a loving mother to her son, Maddux on May 16, 2006. More than anything, Ki simply loved life. She spent her spare time exploring nature by visiting rivers and camp sites with her son. One of her most favorable adventures included a recent multi-state road trip with her son and nieces to attend her sister’s wedding in Montana, driving a convertible Camaro.

She was always willing to help her friends and family when it came to their needs in photography, graphic design (Deer Creek Productions), and general management. More importantly, her light-hearted practical jokes will be missed by many.

Kira is survived by her son, Maddux Prechter of Nevada City; father, Edward (Vickie) Prechter of Grass Valley; brother, Mark (Michelle) Prechter of Grass Valley; sister, Amy (Dusty) Perry of Bozeman, MT; and nieces, Maddie and Rylee Prechter of Grass Valley. She will also be missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother; Beverly Prechter; and grandparents Alice and Clyde Prechter and Doris and Bill Maddux.

Donations to the Maddux Prechter Education Fund

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up an Educational Fund for Ki’s son, Maddux. Contributions can be made to Edward Maddux Prechter, 12535 Colfax Hwy., Grass Valley, CA 95945.

A few words from Kira

“Looking back at this journey from hell and back, miserable and awful are the last two words that come to mind. The first words are love and gratitude.

Recognizing how much love was surrounding me all along is such a gift. And the gratitude I feel to everyone who has been with me through this is overwhelming. Cancer will make you feel however you let it. Why not go with the positive side? And remember when you go through hell, keep on walking”

-Ki

P.S. Never google breast cancer…

Another update on the 30 Year Reunion!

I know, I know, it’s a bit early to start promoting.  BUT… just want to have some information out there about when approximately our 30-Year Reunion will be happening so.  Mark your calendars for Saturday 11 August 2018. Again, we are arranging the event the week of the Fair so those coming in from out of town, state, or country can enjoy all the festivities of the week.

I am working tentatively with a couple different venues at the moment, the reunion will include dinner and music at the venue.  I will also be setting up a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn for those coming from out of town who no longer have family in the immediate area. Please take advantage of Uber or taxi’s to take you to and from the Reunion.

Save the date: Saturday 11 August 2018

If you know any classmate that is not linked up to us via the website, Twitter or Facebook, please send them our way.  All notifications here are also duplicated on our Facebook page.  Let’s try to reach out to as many classmates as we can before the next event.

If you have any recommendations, want to join the committee to help, etc. please contact me personally on reunion@nuhs1988.com or alternatively lainey.bird@hotmail.com.

You can still donate at any time to the Reunion Fund: Click here to donate

Many Thanks,

Elaine Bird (Hay)

LINDSEY VAN WHY

Lindsey Van Why  ~   31 March 1970 –  14 February 2014

MEMORIAL SERVICE — A celebration of life affectionately titled “Lindsey’s Last Toast” is scheduled for 1:30 pm March 15, 2014 at Twin Pines Community Center, Belmont, California.  Family members invite anyone whose life was touched by the man to attend, and ask that they share in the spirit of the celebration by bringing a story about him to tell.

Belmont father killed in ski accident remembered as a ‘true adventurer’ with ‘love for life’

POSTED:   02/21/2014 03:13:18 PM PST

Lindsey-Van-Why-455x420BELMONT — The last photo on Lindsey Van Why’s camera roll was of a caution sign at the top of an icy Lake Tahoe trail reading “Trees Don’t Move,” a haunting glimpse into the Belmont father of two’s final thoughts.

“I don’t know why he took that picture, and I don’t know what it meant,” said wife Robin Van Why. “But he didn’t come back after that.”

Van Why, a 43-year-old safety engineer known to his loved ones as a “true adventurer” whose compassion and generosity doled out daily lessons to all who knew him, was killed in a Valentine’s Day ski accident after veering into a tree just off the Cascade Trail.

Authorities told family members that the experienced skier, who his wife said “could have been a professional,” appeared to have hit a patch of ice on his way down the trail he had skied so many times before. His best friend rushed to his side after seeing him down out of the corner of his eye, screaming pleas for help to overhead lift riders as he found his friend unconscious with a faint pulse.

“And then he was gone,” said Robin Van Why, who was at her best friend’s Truckee cabin with her 9- and 4-year-old sons when her husband’s accident occurred. “He died on the mountain in his best friend’s arms.”

‘IT ONLY TAKES THAT ONE TIME’

The morning of Lindsey Van Why’s death began like many others for the outdoor enthusiast and family man, on a President’s Day weekend ski getaway with his wife, family friends, and sons, Tanner and Cooper.

“My little adventure boys are the spitting image of their father,” Robin Van Why said. “He taught them a love of nature, a love of the outdoors, and most of all, a love for other people.”

The family kissed their father goodbye as he went off for a “Dad’s Ski Day” with his best friend, donning his leather “fun hat” adorned with pins from his travels in lieu of his usual helmet.

“It was a freak accident. He was too good of a skier, and it was such a simple run,” Robin Van Why said. “I want everyone to know that even if you think you can defy the odds, wear a helmet so you can be safe. It only takes that one time.”

The momentary lapse in safety came as a huge irony for the man who made safety his career and priority, stating in his bio at Milpitas-based XL Construction that his favorite part of the job was “sending his employees home safely to their families.”

“He was someone you could count on, and his word was gold. He really made everyone around him feel like he cared and many of us confided in him in regards to our work and home life,” said Erick Martin, who worked with Van Why for two years at XL Construction. “He loved his family more than anything, and it showed in his eyes when he spoke of them.”

Co-workers said the man took pride in his work and put all of his energy into being the best job safety coordinator he could be, but would always be off in time to pick up his kids from school, help them with their homework, and coach Tanner’s baseball team as he had for the past six years.

“That’s what he taught everyone–to be safe and love your family,” Robin Van Why said. “We were a foursome to be reckoned with — he taught me and our boys about life and about love, and about how to live life to the fullest.”

The man’s friends expressed similar sentiments about the lessons he imparted with or without intention, and described feeling “lost” and “reeling” from the death of their longtime, intensely loyal friend. He was a “magnet,” they said, drawing in thousands of people with his warmth and his love over the course of his short lifetime.

“He was the glue that kept everyone together, the planner, the picture taker,” said Michelle Tuggle, the man’s childhood friend of more than 30 years. “I’m just so proud of how he turned out. Just look at this beautiful life he made.”

A COMMUNITY’S SUPPORT

lindsey familyThe family returned from Placer County to an incredible showing of community support Friday, with residents coming out in droves to offer assistance and make plans for the two young boys. The Belmont community made up a significant fraction of the 253 families who donated nearly $33,000 to a memorial fund by Friday afternoon [as of 3 March the site has raised just short of $50,000], a demonstration of love and support for which Robin Van Why “could not be more grateful.”

“The community of Belmont is unbelievable,” Robin Van Why said. “This is an outpouring of support Lindsey would have been so proud to witness.”

In addition to the online fundraiser to offset immediate costs and start an education fund for the two young boys, donations can be made to the Van Why Family Memorial Fund at any Bank of the West branch. Donations can still be made on the original fundraising site at http://www.youcaring.com/memorial-fundraiser/support-the-van-why-family/139599

A celebration of life affectionately titled “Lindsey’s Last Toast” is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 15 at Twin Pines Community Center. Family members invite anyone whose life was touched by the man to attend, and ask that they share in the spirit of the celebration by bringing a story about him to tell.

“It’s exactly what he would have wanted — he was quite a storyteller, and he lived quite the story,” his wife added. “The only thing that gives me peace is that he died doing what he loved. And I’m going to miss him every day for the rest of my life.”

Lindsey, you will be sorely missed by your classmates.

Another Reunion come and gone…

Thank you for another successful reunion.  Our 25-year Reunion was a little low key this year but a good time was had by all.

Just a couple housekeeping items:

  • This is the age of the internet, so there is no such thing as mailing invitations, or making calls to find you.  Any addresses we would have had for students, are long expired.  If you want to be informed about Reunions you must be looking for us!  A quick Google search, and we are in the top three results.  Not too hard to find.
  • Register on this site for email updates when events and Reunions are planned. You can also get onto our Class of 88 Facebook page!  Connect with classmates and get all the latest updates.
  • Donations are still essential to the upkeep and maintenance of this website and will fund our deposits for the next Reunion. You can make donations by clicking the “donations” button on the sidebar.
  • We’re already starting to look for 30-Year Reunion Ideas, post your ideas in our Facebook group or email is at reunion@nuhs1988.com. Contribute and get involved, make a suggestion or join the Committee!

Thanks everyone!!
